KCC volleyball, soccer teams fall to tough competition

It’s been a tough week for the Kellogg Community College women’s volleyball and soccer teams so far, with the volleyball team falling to Grand Rapids Community College in three straight sets in an away game on Tuesday and the soccer team falling to Schoolcraft College 0-2 in a home game yesterday afternoon. Here are the stats from each respective contest.

Women’s volleyball vs. GRCC on Tuesday, Sept. 18 (12-25, 11-25, 14-25)

Freshman Janelle Hayes (Battle Creek Central) had six kills and two assisted blocks; sophomore Kylie Marquardt (Eisenhower) had five kills and four digs; sophomore Megan Allen (Colon) had two kills, 14 assists, two aces and one assisted block; and freshman Tara VanDenberg (Pennfield) had 14 digs and one ace. As of this afternoon VanDenberg is ranked in the top 20 in the nation for digs, with 241 so far for the season.

Women’s soccer vs. Schoolcraft College on Wednesday, Sept. 19 (0-2)

The second-year women’s soccer program continues to improve despite some tough losses, and this game was no exception (a scene from the game is pictured above). The Bruins gave up a goal each half in a huge improvement over last year’s 0-9 defeat against the same college. On defense, freshman goalkeeper Savanna Lacey (Carman-Ainsworth) had six saves in 89 minutes.

The soccer team plays next against Indiana Tech beginning at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, at home on the soccer field on KCC’s North Avenue campus.
