KCC women’s basketball roundup: Jan. 30 through Feb. 4, 2013

The Kellogg Community College women’s basketball team’s schedule has picked up over the past few weeks, with the Bruins’ last three games — all losses — played against the current top three teams in their Michigan Community College Athletic Association Western Conference. Here’s a roundup of recent play.

Vs. LANSING COMMUNITY COLLEGE on JAN. 30, 2013: LOST 39-77 in LANSING

Despite a close halftime score of 28-33, the Bruins were only able to add 11 points in the second half.

Freshman point guard Teonna Pope (Southeastern) led the team in scoring with eight points and also had four steals. Freshman guard Lauren Mengel (Marshall) and sophomore forward Malika Flenorl (Lakeview) each scored seven.

Also contributing for the Bruins were sophomore forward Janeesa Jamierson (Battle Creek Central), who had seven rebounds, and sophomore guard Raeha Weaver (Lakeview), who had three assists.

Vs. LAKE MICHIGAN COLLEGE on FEB. 2, 2013: LOST 56-84 at HOME

Weaver led the Bruins on offense, scoring 14 points, while freshman guard Cherese Vasser (Southeastern) added 11 points and eight rebounds.

Jamierson scored nine points with six rebounds, Pope had four assists and Flenorl had four steals.

Vs. KALAMAZOO VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE on FEB. 4, 2013: LOST 38-68 in KALAMAZOO

Sophomore guard Taylor Mainstone (Harper Creek) led the Bruins in scoring with 10 points, while freshman guard Jackie Harwood (Sault Area) scored nine with three assists, Vasser scored six with 11 rebounds, and Mengel scored five.

Also contributing for the Bruins were Flenorl, who had five rebounds, and Jamierson and Weaver, who each had three steals.

THE RECORD SO FAR

After this string of losses and with about a quarter of the season left to play, KCC’s women’s basketball team has a conference record of 3-7 and an overall record of 7-12 for the season so far. The team plays next beginning at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, Feb. 6, against Grand Rapids Community College in Grand Rapids.
