Kellogg Community College is celebrating the service of U.S. military veterans by designating November Honor Our Veterans Month.

Veteran-centered events held throughout the month will include a Veterans Day Celebration from noon to 12:45 p.m. Nov. 11 in the Student Center; a special Veterans Art Exhibit displayed in the College’s Morris Learning Resource Center (LRC) through Nov. 29; and a Veterans Speaker Series event beginning at 3 p.m. every Monday in November in the LRC’s Spring Lake Room.

All events are free and will take place on KCC’s North Avenue campus, 450 North Ave., Battle Creek.

T.J. Mohl, a KCC counselor and Campus Veterans Committee member, said KCC students and employees have been working for the past three years on putting together a veterans initiative that this year resulted in planning Honor Our Veterans Month as “a whole month of activities to bring attention to veterans and their interest in higher education.”

“KCC honors our veterans for their courage and service,” Mohl said. “It is our duty as a community college to provide access and support as they work to achieve their academic goals.”

The Veterans Day Celebration, which will be free and open to the public, will include the presentation of colors by members of the Michigan Youth ChalleNGe Academy; a singing performance led by KCC music student Anastasia Miller; a reading from members of KCC’s Veterans Writing Project; the reading of “A Soldier’s Prayer” by KCC student veteran Ron Henson; remarks from KCC President Dr. Dennis Bona; refreshments; and tours of the Veterans Art Exhibit.

The Veterans Art Exhibit is on display now and features art created by current KCC students who are also military veterans. The exhibit is free and open to the public during the College’s regular business hours.

Veterans Speaker Series events are open to veterans as well as active-duty military personnel and their families. Panel members include KCC employees, community members and employees from the Battle Creek VA Medical Center.

The current Veterans Speaker schedule is as follows:

  • Nov. 11: Career and Employment Services. Attendees will learn how to prepare for their career while in college and what will make them stand out as an applicant.
  • Nov. 18: Housing and Veterans Affairs Resources. Experts on veteran housing in the Battle Creek area will discuss the many housing options available and will speak on topics ranging from homelessness among veteran populations to U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs loans.
  • Nov. 25: KCC Veteran Resources. Attendees will meet KCC employees and learn about veteran support on campus.

Honor Our Veterans events at KCC will also include an Honoring Our Veterans in the Classroom lunch-and-learn event for KCC employees from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14.
