KCC basketball splits wins with Henry Ford

Both of Kellogg Community College’s basketball teams arrived in Dearborn for their games against Henry Ford Community College Wednesday after wins, but only the women’s team came home with one.

Freshman guard/forward and Battle Creek Central alumna Kayla Freeman secured a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds as the 7-3 Lady Bruins bested the Hawks 61-42. Also contributing for the Bruins were freshman forward Shalay Stevens (Marion, Ind./Marion High School), who scored 12, pulled down nine rebounds and had four assists and four steals; sophomore guard Jackie Harwood (Sault Ste. Marie/Sault Area High School), who scored 10 and had three steals; and sophomore guards Teonna Pope and Therese Vasser, both from Detroit/Southeastern High School, who had four assists apiece.

The Bruins’ next game is a home game starting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, when they’ll take on Delta College at the Miller Gym. The team plays their first conference game of the season away against rival Kalamazoo Valley Community College on Jan. 4.

KCC’s 1-8 men’s team trailed Henry Ford 37-58 at the half and never recovered, ultimately falling 59-106. Forward Nathan Taylor (Battle Creek/Battle Creek Central High School), the Bruins’ only sophomore, and forward Vadale Jackson (Detroit/Chandler Park Academy) led the Bruins on offense, with Taylor scoring 13 and grabbing 11 rebounds and Jackson scoring 19 and grabbing 10 rebounds for a double-double apiece. Jackson also added three blocks.

Also contributing for the Bruins were guard Devin Alexander (Benton Harbor/Benton Harbor High School), who scored 11; guard Lucas Jenkins (Athens/Athens High School), who scored 10 and had four assists and two steals; and guard Jalen Owens (Fuquay-Varina, NC/Harnett Central High School), who dished out three assists.

The men’s team’s next game begins at 3 p.m. today against Macomb Community College as part of tournament play at Kalamazoo Valley Community College. The team plays their first conference game of the season away against rival Kalamazoo Valley Community College on Jan. 4.
