Area residents looking for a healthier lunch have another option on Battle Creek’s North side.

Kellogg Community College’s Service-Learning area is partnering with Battle Creek nonprofit Sprout Urban Farms to offer fresh vegetables for sale from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Thursday in the Student Center on KCC’s North Avenue campus.

The new KCC initiative is part of Sprout’s Fresh on Wheels program, which makes fresh Michigan-grown fruits and vegetables available at high-traffic areas in food deserts across the city. The program began at KCC on Oct. 8 and will continue throughout the coming academic year.

KCC Service-Learning Manager Kate DeGraaf said the partnership came about through collaborative work the College has done with Sprout on the College’s YES-KCC Community Garden and at Sprout locations during KCC’s regular Bruins Give Back volunteer events for students and staff.

“This is a quick and convenient way to add fresh veggies to your meals,” DeGraaf said. “We’re proud to partner with Sprout Urban Farms in increasing access to healthier food options for our community and we hope the community will take advantage of Sprout’s presence here on campus.”

The Fresh on Wheels service at KCC is available to the general public in addition to KCC students and employees, and cash, credit cards and SNAP Bridge Cards are all accepted forms of payment. Customers using Bridge Cards can take advantage of the Double Up Food Bucks program, which doubles the value of their purchase by giving matching what they spend on fruits and vegetables so they can buy additional healthy food items.
