Kellogg Community College this winter will for the first time offer Nursing Assistant Training courses to students at the College’s Fehsenfeld Center in Hastings, and will unveil a new CNA Lab at the center during a CNA Open House in January.

The CNA Open House, which is free and open to the public, will run from noon to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, at the center, 2950 M-179, Hastings, and will give community members interested in the program a chance to tour the new lab (pictured above) and talk with KCC program faculty and administration. Light refreshments also will be provided.

KCC’s Board of Trustees approved a $28,000 expenditure to cover costs of the new CNA Lab at its August board meeting, with funds for the necessary equipment and renovations coming from donations designated for the center over the past several years. The new lab is a 900-square-feet renovated classroom that houses equipment including several hospital beds, new geriatric-style manikins and other medical equipment for student training; the new space was completed this fall.

Fehsenfeld Center Director Colin McCaleb said the new training opportunity will be a valuable addition to the area’s workforce, providing much-needed skilled training in a high-demand field.

“KCC’s Nursing Assistant Training Program offers the training necessary for students to become CNAs certified to work in a variety of health care settings, from adult care and community centers to home-health, hospice and primary care agencies, and even hospitals,” McCaleb said. “The demand for nursing assistants has grown in the Hastings area, and we look forward to helping our students pass state testing requirements to obtain their CNA certifications.”

KCC will be offering two daylong morning and afternoon Nursing Assistant Training sessions during the Spring 2017 semester, including one section running from Jan. 23 through Feb. 9 and another running March 13 through 30. KCC offers similar training on its campuses in Albion, Battle Creek and Coldwater each semester.
