Baseball results: KCC wins season opener 6-3 over Ivy Tech

KCC's Spring 2020 baseball team.

The Kellogg Community College baseball team kicked off its Spring 2020 season this weekend with a 6-3 victory over Ivy Tech Community College in Ohio.

Leading from the mound for the Bruins were sophomores Connor Brawley and Chad Sommers, who each pitched two innings, giving up zero runs. Sophomore Mackenzie Martin pitched one inning for the win, and sophomore Adam Henderson pitched an inning for the save, allowing zero hits.

From the plate, sophomore Nolan Lawerence hit 3-5 and sophomores Henderson and Zach Burkholder hit 2-5.

Head KCC Baseball Coach Eric Laskovy the Bruins lost a 3-1 lead in the ninth but persevered to win in 11 innings.

“Our pitching staffed only issued one walk in 11 innings and struck out 10,” Laskovy said. “We played a relatively clean game defensively with the exception of a couple lapses in communication. We have a long ways to go, but our guys played with great effort and found a way to come out on top.”

The baseball team has a few weeks off from scheduled competition until the team’s annual spring trip to Louisiana at the end of February, when the Bruins will take on some of the top-ranked teams in the Nation. The team’s first home game starts at 2 p.m. March 20 against Lake Michigan College at Bailey Park in Battle Creek.
