KCC men’s and women’s basketball roundup: Dec. 14-15, 2012

The men’s basketball team is 3-9 and the women are 4-4 after this weekend’s contests.

It was another rough weekend for the Kellogg Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams, with the men losing two as part of the Christmas Classic tournament held at Kalamazoo Valley Community College and the women losing an away game in Port Huron. Below are KCC highlights from each contest.

KCC MEN’S BASKETBALL

Vs. Henry Ford Community College on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012 (lost 58-73)

Freshman forward Nathan Taylor (Battle Creek Central) racked up another double-double on Friday, leading the Bruins in scoring with 16 points and leading in rebounds with 11 boards. Sophomore guard Christian Covile (John Glenn) had a double-double of his own, scoring 14 and pulling down 10 rebounds. Taylor and Covile each also had four steals.

Also contributing were sophomore forward Darius Holman (Rich East), who scored 11; sophomore guard Quincy Armstrong, Jr. (Harper Creek), who had four assists; and freshman forward Devrin Hill (Portage Central), who had two blocks.

Vs. Macomb Community College on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012 (lost 79-84)

Taylor led again on offense, scoring 20 with eight rebounds. Freshman guard Jalen Lamar (Comstock) scored 17, while Covile added 16. Armstrong added seven boards, six assists and three steals, while Holman added four assists and Hill had five blocks.

The losses bring the Kellogg Community College men’s basketball team’s record to 3-9 for the season so far. The team plays next against Lake Michigan College — their first conference opponent of the season — at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, in Benton Harbor.

KCC WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vs. St. Clair Community College on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012 (lost 58-87)

Sophomore guard Taylor Mainstone (Harper Creek) led the Bruins in scoring with 11, while freshman guard Lauren Mengel (Marshall) scored nine and sophomore forward Janeesa Jamierson (Battle Creek Central) and freshman guard Andrea Polley (Delton Kellogg) each scored six.

Jamierson also pulled down seven rebounds, while Polley added four steals and four assists. Freshman forward Britni Upston (Tekonsha) and freshman guard Cherese Vasser (Southeastern) each had six rebounds.

The weekend’s loss bring the Kellogg Community College women’s basketball team’s record to 4-4 for the season so far. The team plays next against Ohio’s Owens Community College at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, at home in the Miller Gym on KCC’s North Avenue campus.
