The Healthy Choices Leadership Organization – a student-led campus club at Kellogg Community College – will host a workshop this month to raise awareness about issues related to human trafficking.
The Human Trafficking Workshop, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, March 14, in the auditorium of the Davidson Visual and Performing Arts Center on the college’s North Avenue campus, 450 North Ave., Battle Creek.
The event will feature speakers including Saundra Lawson, founder and executive director of Project Liberty, a task force dedicated to stopping human trafficking; Maria Markos, a community educator and resource coordinator at Bronson Battle Creek/Sexual Assault Services of Calhoun County; and Calhoun County Undersheriff Tim Hurtt, formerly chief of police at KCC.
HCLO Advisor and KCC Counselor T.J. Mohl said the event falls in line with the campus club’s mission to bring information to campus regarding health and safety. This will be the second consecutive year the group has held an event addressing the topic.
“During the spring semester for the last two years, we have brought experts to campus to discuss the growing concern regarding human trafficking,” Mohl said. “It is imperative that we each take the time to be informed and to be alert to what is happening in our community and to know how we can make a difference.”
A training and awareness video provided by Truckers Against Trafficking also will be presented during the workshop.
“The focus of this video is to alert truckers to the vital role they can play in stopping this epidemic,” Mohl said. “They can be the eyes and ears of our nation’s safety.”
The event is being sponsored by the HCLO in partnership with the Substance Abuse Council of Calhoun County and the Bruin Christian Fellowship, another KCC campus club.
