The Kellogg Community College men’s basketball team ended their 2012-13 season with a 71-100 loss to Lansing Community College in a first-round game of their Michigan Community College Athletic Association Western Conference District 9 tournament last Tuesday.

The Bruins finished the year with a winning 6-10 record in the MCCAA and a record of 9-20 for the season overall.

Melvin McKnight, head coach of the men’s basketball team at KCC, acknowledged the latter record as the result of a difficult non-conference schedule played to prepare the team for how tough the league is.

“We were not as successful as we would have liked,” McKnight said of the season, “but we did make it to the post-season.”

Not only did the team make it to post-season play, but nearly half of this year’s squad were recognized with post-season MCCAA awards, including freshman forward Nathan Taylor (Battle Creek Central), who was named Western Conference Freshman of the Year in addition to making the All-Western Conference 2nd Team and Western Conference All-Freshman Team.

Other award winners include sophomore guard Christian Covile (John Glenn), who was named to the All-Western Conference 3rd Team; and sophomore forward Darius Holman (Rich East) and sophomore guard Marlon Allen (North Farmington), who were named All-Western Conference Honorable Mentions.

“I was very pleased to have four of my 10 players receive these honors,” McKnight said.

Covile led the Bruins on offense in their final game, scoring 21, pulling down seven rebounds and dishing out four assists. Taylor scored 18 and Holman added 11, while Allen contributed with four assists and three steals. Freshman forward Devrin Hill (Portage Central) had three blocks.
