The public is invited to visit Kellogg Community College’s North Avenue campus to view the college’s new Student Services Hub, the first completed stage of a $6.9 million renovation project that began on the campus last August.
The Hub – which hosts the college’s Records and Registration desk and new Admissions offices – accounts for around 6,400 square feet of the total 29,000-square-foot project, which, when completed, will include a renovated cafeteria and Student Services offices in addition to the renovated Hub space.
Kay Keck, vice president for Student Services at KCC, said the completed Hub area will allow the college to better serve its students in a more streamlined fashion, enabling them to more easily complete many college processes in one location at one time.
The area includes 12 open computers for students to use to complete everything from their college application and registration to checking email and filling out their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for financial aid purposes.
Previously there was a single computer in the Financial Aid office through which students could complete their FAFSA, Keck said.
“Particularly if you’re a new student and you’re coming in and you haven’t completed any of your requirements, you can start your process right there,” Keck said of the Hub. “You can go online, do your application, and we’re in there to help if you need it.”
Two KCC staff members will be available at all times to assists students who need help in the Hub, Keck said, including an academic advisor who can answer quick advising questions on the spot.
Keck said the new space offers an expanded and enhanced version of what was previously offered through the four computers stationed in the college’s North Walkway across from the former Customer Service windows, which formerly housed the Records and Registration area.
Those computers will stay in the walkway and will be available for students to use during hours when the Hub is closed; the former Customer Service area now houses the Financial Aid offices and the Business Office.
Directly across the lobby from the Hub area is the new location of KCC’s Admissions office, which facilitates the college’s ability to meet students’ admissions needs through its proximity to other Student Service offices and also provides admissions staff with more space than they had previous to the renovations.
“The atmosphere of the new space is great,” Keck said. “Many students come in and know exactly what they want to do, and the Hub enables them to serve themselves.”
The Hub is located across the walkway from the college’s Ohm Information Technology Center and adjacent to the cafeteria, which is under renovation and scheduled for completion by the end of April. The Hub is open 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays.
