KCC softball splits midweek games against LMC, GRCC

The Kellogg Community College softball team improved their conference record to 3-7 this week by splitting games with Lake Michigan College and Grand Rapids Community College in a pair of double headers played Wednesday and Thursday.

The Bruins won game one of their Wednesday contests against Lake Michigan College 11-3 at home, with freshman Michelle Kenealy pitching one and two-thirds inning in relief for the win.

Batting leaders included freshman outfielder Samantha Freel, who hit three for three at the plate including a home run and two RBIs; freshman catcher Mackenzie Gibson, who hit two in three at-bats, including an RBI; sophomore infielder Taylor Howes, who hit two with two RBIs; and freshman infielder/outfielder Jacquelyn Harwood and sophomore outfielder Sarah Hendrickson, who each hit one with two RBIs apiece.

In game two’s 5-8 loss, Gibson hit four for four including an RBI; sophomore infielder/outfielder Michaela Marble hit two for three including a double and an RBI; sophomore Mackenzie Kendall hit two for three with an RBI; Harwood hit two; and Howes hit one with an RBI.

The Bruins scored a 5-0 shutout in game one against GRCC in Grand Rapids on Thursday, with freshman pitcher Erika Olsen pitching a full seven innings for the win and striking out two.

Marble brought in two RBIs with a single hit, Freel hit a double and Gibson and Howes each had a hit with an RBI apiece.

The tables turned in game two, with the Bruins falling 2-7. Howes hit three for four from the plate, including an RBI, while Freel and Harwood each hit two for four and sophomore catcher Genevieve Baushke hit one for three.
