KCC softball team wins 5 of last 7 conference games

After a string of postponed games to unplayable weather conditions, the Kellogg Community College softball team got back to business this week, winning five of their last seven games.

The past week’s play — along with two losses to Muskegon Community College on April 5 and another two to Lake Michigan College on April 16 — bring the Bruins’ conference record to an even 7-14 for the season so far.

Here’s a roundup of stats from recent play.

Vs. JACKSON COMMUNITY COLLEGE, April 18, 2013 (won 6-2)

The first of a scheduled double header, this game was called in the sixth inning due to lighting and rain. The second game was postponed and, weather permitting, should be played at 3 p.m. Thursday in Jackson.

Freshman Erika Olsen pitched five innings for the win, striking out one. At the plate, sophomores Tiffani Allwardt and Mackenzie Kendall and freshmen Kaitlyn Devires and Jacquelyn Harwood all had a hit apiece, with Harwood and Allwardt hitting doubles and Allwardt adding three RBIs. Kendall also had an RBI.

Vs. LANSING COMMUNITY COLLEGE, April 20, 2013

In game one’s 1-4 loss, sophomore Genevieve Baushke and freshman Samantha Freel each had two hits, while Kendall had an RBI.

In game two’s 2-1 win, sophomore Ashley Burritt pitched a full seven innings for the win, striking out one. Baushke hit two and Allwardt hit a double with an RBI.

Vs. GLEN OAKS COMMUNITY COLLEGE, April 21, 2013

In game one’s 4-1 win, freshman Alyssa Olsen pitched a full seven innings for the win, striking out five.

At the plate, freshman Mackenzie Gibson hit two, including a double and an RBI; Kendall hit two with an RBI; Freel and Harwood each hit one with an RBI; and freshman Taylor Lewis hit two for three, including a double.

In game two’s 9-0 win, freshman Michele Kenealy pitched five innings for the win.

At the plate, Freel hit a double with three RBIs; Gibson hit two with two RBIs; Lewis hit two, including a double, with an RBI and added a stolen base; and Kendall hit two with an RBI and also added a steal.

Vs. ANCILLA COLLEGE, April 22, 2013

The Bruins lost game one 13-0 but won game two 9-5. Stats were not available at the time of this writing.

This game has been postponed due to weather. Weather permitting, the Bruins play next beginning at 3 p.m. today against Grand Rapids Community College, a double header at home at Bailey Park in Battle Creek. Click here to view the softball team’s spring schedule in a post on this blog.
