Kellogg Community College will observe Constitution Day with an address from District Judge Michael Schipper and the presentation of a movie about the origins of the U.S. Constitution.
The events will run from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, in the newly renovated Student Center on KCC’s North Avenue campus, 450 North Ave., Battle Creek. All activities are free and open to the public.
Donna Street, president of KCC’s Paralegal Student Association, which is cosponsoring the event with the college’s Student Life office, the event, said the event will be a good way for people to get an overview of how our country was founded.
“I hear a lot of people complain about what they don’t like, but don’t see too many people getting involved to personally make changes,” Street said. “If you have an understanding of the Constitution, of how laws are written, of how America was founded, you might have more motivation.”
The day’s events will begin with a presentation of a movie about the Constitution, to be followed by a Constitution trivia game at 1 p.m. with prizes for the winners. Schipper, who was appointed judge of the 56B District Court in Barry County in 2011, is scheduled to speak at 2:30 p.m. about current legal topics including gun control and the legalization of marijuana, with a question and answer session to follow.
Representatives from the college’s student Democrat and Republican groups will be on hand with information about their respective organizations, and free copies of the U.S. Constitution and voter registration forms will be available, as well.
Constitution Day commemorates Sept. 17, 1787, when the delegates at the Constitutional Convention signed and adopted the U.S. Constitution as a governing document. By federal law, all publicly funded educational institutional institutions nationwide are required to provide educational programming on the history of the American Constitution on or about Sept. 17 each year.
