KCC sports teams to play for health awareness in October

The Kellogg Community College women’s volleyball and women’s soccer teams will play to raise awareness of autism and breast cancer in a pair of special home games that will include donations, door prizes and special uniforms.

Members of KCC’s women’s volleyball team will wear special shirts promoting autism awareness during their Tuesday, Oct. 8, home game against Kalamazoo Valley Community College, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. The game will be held in the Miller Gymnasium on KCC’s North Avenue campus, where donations will be accepted at the door to benefit the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek Autism Society.

“Being a lead teacher for infants through children 24 months old at a preschool, head volleyball coach Amy Julien sees the effects of autism on families every day,” said Sharon Powell, coordinator of events at KCC’s Miller Physical Education Building. “Coach Julien is hoping in some small way to help bring a brighter light to these issues.”

Members of KCC’s women’s soccer team will wear pink socks to promote breast cancer awareness during their Saturday, Oct. 12, home game against Owens Community College, which will begin at 1 p.m. The game will be held on the soccer field on KCC’s North Avenue campus, where donations will be taken at the gate to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

“Breast cancer is a disease that will touch the lives of many Americans in some form throughout their life – whether their own life, a loved one’s or that of a coworker or friend,” Powell said.

Drawings for gift bags including KCC logo items will be held before the start of the third set of the volleyball game and during halftime of the soccer game for those who donate.

In addition to raising funds for health-related causes during the special games noted above, KCC’s Athletics Department will be collecting spare change to purchase toys for the Toys for Tots Foundation throughout the months of October and November. Collection jars will be located in the Miller Building office during business hours and donations will be accepted during home women’s basketball games in November.
