KCC’s 2013-14 basketball season is underway

Kellogg Community College’s  men’s and women’s Bruins basketball teams began their official 2013-14 seasons last weekend with competition at the Tip-Off Classic basketball tournament at Oakland Community College in Auburn Hills.

Below is introductory information about each team.

KCC MEN’S BASKETBALL

The men’s team’s current schedule includes nine home games, the first of which begins at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, against Marygrove College. All home games offer free admission and are held in the gym at the Miller Physical Education Building on KCC’s North Avenue campus, 450 North Ave., Battle Creek.

The Bruins’ current home game schedule* is as follows (conference games are in bold):

  • 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, against Marygrove College
  • 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, against Grand Rapids Community College
  • 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, against Glen Oaks Community
  • 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, against Ancilla College
  • 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, against Lansing Community College
  • 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, against Kalamazoo Valley Community College
  • 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, against Muskegon Community College
  • 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, against Jackson College
  • 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, against Lake Michigan College

This year’s men’s roster of 15 includes just two sophomores, with forward and Battle Creek Central alum Nathan Taylor the only Bruin returning for a second season. Taylor was named the Michigan Community College Athletic Association’s Western Conference Freshman of the Year last season in addition to making the MCCAA’s All-Western Conference 2nd Team and Western Conference All-Freshman Team.

New local recruits for the men’s team include freshman Tyler Eutsey, a forward, and freshman Lucas Jenkins, a guard, both from Athens/Athens High School; freshman Lincoln Hackworth, a guard from Homer/Homer High School; and sophomore Stormy Johnson, a center from Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Central High School.

KCC WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The women’s team’s current schedule includes 12 home games, the first of which begins at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, against the junior varsity team from the Indiana Institute of Technology (Indiana Tech). All home games offer free admission and are held in the gym at the Miller Physical Education Building on KCC’s North Avenue campus, 450 North Ave., Battle Creek.

The Bruins’ current home game schedule* is as follows (conference games are in bold):

  • 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, against the junior varsity team from the Indiana Institute of Technology
  • 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, against Henry Ford Community College
  • 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, against the junior varsity team from Albion College
  • 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, against Delta College
  • 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8 against Grand Rapids Community College
  • 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, against Glen Oaks Community College
  • 5:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, against Ancilla College
  • 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, against Lansing Community College

This year’s women’s roster of 15 includes four sophomores, all returning, including guard Jackie Harwood, from Sault Ste. Marie/Sault Area High School; point guard Teonna Pope and guard Therese Vasser, from Detroit/Southeastern High School; and forward Britni Upston, from Tekonsha/Tekonsha High School.

New local recruits for the women’s team include guard/forward Kayla Freeman and guard Tomeka Smith, both from Battle Creek/Battle Creek Central High School; center Nikkole Hegler and forward Alicia Willis, from Kalamazoo/Loy Norrix High School; and center Danyelle Jones, from Battle Creek/Lakeview High School.
