KCC offering nonprofit training courses this spring

Kellogg Community College’s Workforce Solutions Department is offering the following courses for nonprofit training this spring. Unless otherwise noted, all courses will be held at KCC’s Regional Manufacturing Technology Center, 405 Hill Brady Road, Battle Creek.

FEBRUARY

Basic Grant Seeking
Join this class for an overview of how to use the Foundation Center Database to find potential funding sources. Search more than 90,000 potential funders nationwide to locate resources for your organization. Information on local funding sources will also be provided. Class size is limited, so register early.
Time: 1-3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4

Basic Grant Proposals
This class is open to everyone interested in learning the basics of developing a grant proposal to apply for funding for a nonprofit organization. A broad overview of the grant writing process will be provided and students will be sent home with handouts useful for diving further into the process on their own. This class is most appropriate for those with little grant writing experience.
Time: 9-11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12

Overview of Changes in Office 2013
This class will give you an introduction to the basic changes you can expect to see as you move from Office 2010 to Office 2013, including information about changes in Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook. It is anticipated students will already have a working knowledge of the basic Microsoft Office package so this class will solely focus on navigating through changes between the two versions. All students will leave with a printed manual that outlines changes.

MARCH

Overview of GiftWorks Software to Manage Donors
GiftWorks is an affordable and easy to use fundraising software that tracks donors, manages funds, runs events and conducts mailings easily. GiftWorks integrates with QuickBooks and also has an online donation component that allows you to accept donations directly from your website. Learn more about the functionality of GiftWorks to see if this software is a fit for your organization. Feel free to bring your lunch while enjoying this presentation.

Introduction to MS Excel (2010/2013)
This class will cover getting started with Excel and introduce students to the basics of formulas, formatting and charts. All participants will leave with a complete interactive training program that includes demos and a printed manual.

Using Video to Effectively Tell your Story
Learn how video can empower your audience with a passion for your organization’s mission. Maybe you’re already using a camcorder and wish your videos could look more professional, but don’t have millions of dollars to spend. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to use the medium of video to effectively tell your story in a professional, compelling way that won’t break the bank, even if you don’t have your own camera. You’ll see examples of successful programs and be introduced to low-cost tools to create and distribute your message to a wider audience.
Time: 2-4 p.m. Thursday, March 20

APRIL

Intermediate MS Excel (2010/2013)
This class will build on the Introduction to MS Excel class by covering lists, working with sheets, cell names, conditional formatting and other intermediate topics. All students will receive a complete interactive training program that includes demos and a printed manual.

Cost: $25

Developing a Basic Marketing and Communications Plan
Learn how to develop a strategic marketing and communications plan, based on templates developed for Kellogg Community College, which maintains a brand grounded in educational excellence and community enhancement. Topics will include assessment, audience, measurement, strategies and costs.
Time: Noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, April 16
Cost: $10

Creating a Free Website or Blog with Weebly
This handy tool gives students access to a free online website creator using a simple widget-based site builder with drag-and-drop elements. Weebly works with Microsoft Windows, Mac OS and Linux computers and automatically generates a mobile version of each website. It also supports basic features for blogging and e-commerce so site owners can develop simple stores and process payments through either PayPal or Google Checkout.
Time: 1-5 p.m. Wednesday, April 30

MAY

Executive Leadership Transition
Everyone knows it’s coming, but being prepared for leadership transition in your organization can mean the difference between struggling and thriving. In this class, nonprofits will learn the basic steps to be prepared for this kind of change and the different roles played by staff and board members.
Time: 1-3 p.m. Tuesday, May 6
Cost: $15
Location: RMTC
