Next Bruins Give Back event is March 21

KCC student-athletes participate in a Bruins Give Back event at a local elementary school

The second of three Bruins Give Back volunteer events of the semester will be held for Kellogg Community College students and employees from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, March 21.

Bruins Give Back is a collaborative program involving the College’s service learning area, Student Life office and HandsOn Battle Creek. Each date sees KCC students and employees volunteering at locations in and around Battle Creek.

Kate DeGraaf, service-learning manager at KCC and coordinator of the Bruins Give Back program, said members of the KCC community volunteer to serve between 500 and 600 hours each year through the events, providing a value of more than $11,000 to community partners through their service.

“This is a great way for students to connect with community members as they learn,” DeGraaf said. “As each person serves a little, it is amazing to see the impact as we all come together.”

On March 21, KCC students and employees will:

  • Clean, organize and display items for sale at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore.
  • Clean at Kingman Museum. Weather permitting, they may help clean up the grounds outside.
  • Assist North Pennfield Elementary School students with making dog treats and dog toys to be donated to the Calhoun County Animal Shelter.

KCC students or employees who would like to participate in Bruins Give Back can sign up online at  www.kellogg.edu/socialscience/servicelearning/projects.html. Organizations interested in partnering with KCC as part of the Bruins Give Back program can email DeGraaf at degraafk@kellogg.edu to express interest.

The Bruins Give Back program is one of several community service initiatives conducted at KCC each year. The College’s commitment to service is exhibited in the service-learning endorsement required for many KCC students pursuing an associate degree at KCC as of the fall semester of 2012; KCC students completed around 2,000 hours of service-learning work during the fall 2013 semester alone.
