Kellogg Community College’s Bruin Bookstore is collecting gently used athletic shoes for donation and worn out athletic shoes to recycle as part of a Sneaker Collection campaign during the month of April.
The bookstore, located on the first floor of the Lane-Thomas Building on KCC’s campus at 450 North Ave., Battle Creek, will accept the shoes through the end of the month during regular business hours, which are 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Fridays.
Catherine James, manager of the Bruin Bookstore, said gently worn shoes will be donated locally, while worn out shoes will be recycled as part of Nike’s Reuse-a-Shoe program, which turns worn out athletic shoes into a material used to make sports surfaces like basketball and tennis courts, tracks, athletic fields and playgrounds.
“April is Earth Month, and what a great time to clean out closets, donate and recycle,” James said. “We hope people will stop in and learn about our project, or know ahead of time and bring in their shoes, plus check out our sale.”
The bookstore’s Sneaker Collection corresponds with their annual Spring Sale, during which all KCC clothing and gift items are 20 percent off for the entire month. The initiative comes on the heels of a successful Hoodies for the Homeless campaign last fall, during which more than 200 sweatshirts were collected at the bookstore for donation.
