Kellogg Community College alumnus and Peace Corps volunteer Jordan Blekking will return to KCC next month to share Peace Corps experiences and knowledge about gardening with the public.

Blekking will speak at the College’s Service-Learning Lunch and Learn Experience: Garden Edition event from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, in KCC’s Spring Lake Room, located in the library on campus at 450 North Ave., Battle Creek. The event is free and open to the public. Lunch will not be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring their own lunches to eat during the presentation.

Kate DeGraaf, service-learning manager at KCC, said the event will provide gardening information that can be applied by hobbyists or KCC students, staff and community members interested in working in the YES-KCC Community Garden started on campus earlier this summer.

“This Lunch and Learn Experience offers an opportunity for community members to learn more about gardening and to hear about some of the great ways our alumni are continuing to serve their communities even after their time here at KCC,” DeGraaf said. “We’re thrilled to have Jordan back on campus to share his experiences.”

Blekking graduated from Pennfield High School and KCC before transferring to Michigan State University, where he graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies and Applications, specializing in international agriculture. He joined the Peace Corps in February 2012 and was assigned to serve in the Republic of Zambia, a landlocked country south of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in south central Africa.

Blekking, who has documented his Peace Corps experiences throughout his assignment online at jordanblekking.blogspot.com and in a series of articles published by the Battle Creek Enquirer, was also the featured speaker at a public event at KCC in June 2013.
