Kellogg Community College is celebrating Michigan’s first-ever Community College Week this month with a series of events and giveaways intended to encourage people to connect, engage, remember, move and serve.
Community College Week, to be held Sept. 15-19, is a statewide recognition of the 28 community colleges across Michigan. Institutions are celebrating Community College Week in different ways.
“At KCC, we have organized events for students, employees and the public that reflect the College’s mission of engagement, critical thinking and community partnership,” said Eric Greene, director of public information and marketing.
In support of the festivities, the City of Battle Creek on Sept. 2 will formally designate the week as Community College Week and issue a proclamation urging area residents to participate.
All Community College Week events will be held on the College’s campus at 450 North Ave., Battle Creek, and are free and open to students, employees and the public. They include the following:
Connect – Sept. 15
Join KCC leaders, alumni and community members for cider and donuts by the reflecting pools from 9:30 to 11 a.m.
Engage – Sept. 16
Learn about volunteer opportunities in the community and meet representatives from local nonprofit organizations at the College’s annual Volunteer and Civic Engagement Fair inside the Kellogg Room of the Student Center from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Remember – Sept. 17
Discover the history of KCC and the importance of the U.S. Constitution during Constitution Day activities beginning at 11 a.m. Activities will include:
- A Constitution Quiz Show featuring special guest Judge John Hallacy at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m.and 1:30 p.m. in the Student Center
- Judge Hallacy will lead special presentations at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Student Center
- A KCC archives display will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Kellogg Room
Move – Sept. 18
Promote wellness and fun by taking part in one of the following fitness activities on the lawns near the reflecting pools:
- Yoga/Pilates: 9:30 to 10:25 a.m.
- Fitness Challenge: 12 to 1 p.m.
- Zumba: 3 to 4 p.m.
Serve – Sept. 19
Help a local organization during an on-campus Bruins Give Back volunteer event in the Kellogg Room from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers who serve at least one hour will receive a T-shirt.
Participants at each Community College Week event can enter a drawing for a chance to win a grand prize worth $200.
