Kellogg Community College continues its 2015 Piano Concert Series this weekend with two free Master Class Guest Recital sessions featuring Portuguese pianist Miguel Sousa.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will run from 2 to 3 p.m. and 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, April 18, at the Binda Performing Arts Center, on KCC’s campus at 450 North Ave., Battle Creek. While the performance is free, a free-will offering to benefit music programming for KCC students will be collected.
An accomplished international soloist and accompanist who has performed in England, Italy and Sweden in addition to his native Portugal and the United States, Sousa is currently working on a master’s degree in music at Central Michigan University, which awarded him a full graduate assistant scholarship.
His program at KCC will include works by German composers Ludwig van Beethoven and Johannes Brahms, Polish composer Frederic Chopin, Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg and French composer Maurice Ravel. Sousa will also listen to performances by KCC music students and offer feedback on how they can improve their technique.
Sousa strikes a personal tone in his recitals by speaking directly to the audience about the pieces he is performing and why they are significant, explaining the works to connect with his audience and help them more fully appreciate the experience.
The artist has a passion for discovering lesser-known music, and in 2011 created the blog MusiDescobrir – online http://musidescobrir.blogspot.com – which in English translates as “To Discover Music,” where he has posted several videos of himself performing unusual works. Sousa’s official performance website is at www.miguel-sousa.com.
