Kellogg Community College will celebrate Michigan’s second annual Community College Week this month with a series of events and giveaways spread over eight days beginning Sept. 9.
Community College Week began in September 2014 as a statewide initiative recognizing the 28 community colleges across Michigan. Institutions celebrate the event in different ways; KCC’s celebration includes a variety of activities to be held Sept. 9 through 17, including:
- Bruin Blast, KCC’s annual fall kick-off/welcome back event for students, to be held from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, around the reflecting pools on campus at 450 North Ave., Battle Creek.
- The KCC service-learning initiative’s semi-annual Volunteer and Civic Engagement Fair, which connects community organizations with volunteers and others interested in serving in their communities, to be held from from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, in the Student Center on campus at 450 North Ave., Battle Creek.
- The Bruin Scholarship Open golf outing, the KCC Foundations largest fundraiser of the year to raise money for student scholarships, to be held on Friday, Sept. 11, at Binder Park Golf Course in Battle Creek.
- A welcome event for students at KCC’s Fehsenfeld Center, 2950 Gun Lake Road, Hastings, to be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14.
- A welcome event for students at KCC’s Grahl Center, 125 Seeley St., Coldwater, to be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15.
- A welcome event for students at KCC’s Eastern Academic Center, 14055 26 Mile Road, Albion, to be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16.
- A meet-and-greet event with members of KCC’s Board of Trustees with free hors d’oeuvres, to be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, in the Student Center on campus at 450 North Ave., Battle Creek.
- A welcome event for students at KCC’s Regional Manufacturing Technology Center, 405 Hill Brady Road, to be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17.
With the exception of the Bruin Open, all events are free and open to the public, though only students with a current KCC ID can participate in giveaways and prize drawings at KCC welcome events.
Eric Greene, director of Public Information and Marketing at KCC, said KCC has organized events for students, employees and the public “that reflect the College’s mission of engagement, critical thinking and community partnership.”
“KCC’s Community College Week events offer a variety of opportunities for students and members of the public alike to connect with each other and each of the College’s campus locations,” Greene said. “The purpose of Community College Week is to recognize community colleges, and KCC wants to honor that purpose while also recognizing the role our communities play as supporters of the College both financially and as champions of our mission.”
