Kellogg Community College is holding auditions this month to cast more than two dozen performers for the College’s spring musical “Loserville.”

“Loserville” auditions will begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Feb. 25 and 26, in the theatre of the Binda Performing Arts Center, on campus at 450 North Ave., Battle Creek.

KCC Theater professor and “Loserville” director Brad Poer, said they’re looking for up to 25 people ages 16 and up to participate in the production, which he called “an epic tale of adventure and love between geeks in the early 1970s expressed through the music of an early 2000s British pop-punk band.”

Poer said no previous acting, theatre, singing or dancing experience and no prepared songs or monologues are required to audition.

“One of our missions at KCC Theatre is to give students and members of the community the opportunity to see how good being involved in theatre can be for you, whether it’s your first or your 20th time onstage,” Poer said. “The time and effort put into a project like this is not only rewarding personally, but helps create new friends and contacts that can stick with you for life.”

Poer said those interested in auditioning should dress informally in a way that will allow for movement. The auditions will consist of:

  • Learning part of a song from the show. Potential cast members will sing what they just learned in groups and solo.
  • Learning a short piece of movement that can be performed by potential cast members of all experience levels and physical capabilities.
  • Reading select scenes from the script. Potential cast members will get as many tries to audition for as many characters as time allows. Copies of the scripts for scenes covered during the auditions will be available at the front desk of the KCC’s Arts and Communication offices in the Davidson Visual and Performing Arts Center beginning Monday, Feb. 22.

Rehearsals for the production will begin Tuesday, March 1, and will run from 7 to 9 p.m. most nights Mondays through Fridays until the opening of the show April 15. Poer said the entire cast may not be needed at every rehearsal, but cast members should expect to be available at least three or four nights each week.

All cast members must commit to appearing in two weekend technical rehearsals (April 9 and 10) and in all six “Loserville” performances (April 15, 16, 17, 22, 23 and 24). No rehearsals will be held April 4 through 8, which is KCC’s Spring Break.

KCC’s spring musical “Loserville” will show at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, April 15, 16, 22 and 23, and at 3 p.m. Sundays, April 17 and 24, at KCC’s Binda Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $5 for KCC students and employees with current KCC IDs and $10 for general admission.
