Kellogg Community College’s softball team is entering its final season with a small team that’s hoping to do some big things.
Head Coach Michael Miller even gave a few moments’ thought to a bus trip to the National Championship in May.
“We can make as much of this season as we can,” Miller said, adding that the team’s had a lot of conversation about making the final season count. “I’ve seen the turnaround since we took our break in the fall.”
The team will travel to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, March 12 for a series of games that will wrap up March 16. The Bruins will open conference play against Glen Oaks Community College in Centreville March 23; the team’s first home game will be against Kalamazoo Valley Community College March 24.
The Bruins will be stepping onto the diamond with just 12 players. Miller said they’ll be doubling up on positions, but they’ll be ready. He highlighted his pitchers, sophomore Alexa Stephenson, of Battle Creek, a Pennfield grad, and Kylie Masko, a sophomore from Grand Haven.
Masko can throw with either hand, something Miller said will be an advantage.
“We’ve got good players, good athletes and flexibility within the 12,” Miller said. “Short of significant injury or something that really limits our roster, I feel like even having a shorter set to work with, I’ve got good kids with some versatility.”
