Kellogg Community College introduced English Language Learning classes for the Fall 2018 semester, and now students interested in building their English skills while earning college credits can apply for a scholarship to help them do just that.

The KCC Foundation’s new English Language Learning Scholarship is available for the Spring 2019 semester and provides $500, enough to cover the cost of one ELL class; each four-credit class costs $491 at the tuition and fee rate for Battle Creek residents.

KCC English professor Elyse Jozlin, who teaches the classes, said the new ELL programming has met with success.

“We have students from all over the world that are in the class currently,” Jozlin said. “It’s really encouraging to see so much interest in these courses.”

So far, there are students from Peru, Japan, Yemen, Russia and Burma enrolled.

“The energy in the room is palpable and it’s contagious,” Jozlin said. “Everyone is just so excited to be there.”

ELL classes offered this semester include:

  • ELL 83: Intermediate Reading and Writing
  • ELL 84: Intermediate Grammar and Communication
  • ELL 85: Intermediate Speaking and Listening
  • ELL 93: Advanced Reading and Writing
  • ELL 94: Advanced Grammar and Communication
  • ELL 95: Advanced Speaking and Listening

By January, those classes will also be offered at the introductory level.

“If students are interested in taking classes in January of 2019, they should apply for the scholarship now so there is plenty of time to find out if the scholarship is awarded. Students can make more informed decisions based on that information,” Jozlin said. “Students can also come to KCC and take the ESL Accuplacer test now to see what classes they place into.”

Registration for the Spring 2019 semester begins Oct. 29 and classes begin Jan. 11.
