Kellogg Community College’s women’s volleyball team opened the season in good form last week with four wins over five matches in just three days, including a home win over conference opponent Ancilla College.
The Bruins also put in a strong showing at the Owens Express Invitational in Toledo this weekend, winning three of four matches.

Thursday, Aug. 29: KCC 3, Ancilla 1
KCC defeated Ancilla College in the Bruins’ first home match of the season in the Miller Gym Thursday in four sets, winning set one 25-18, set two 25-17 and set four 25-16; the Chargers took set three 25-19.
Freshman Erika Knieper (Marshall/Noblesville High School) had 18 kills, 2 aces, 15 digs and 1 block; sophomore Madison Duchney (Marshall/Marshall High School) had 8 kills, 2 aces and 4 digs; and sophomore Madison Jones (Hillsdale/Hillsdale High School) had 36 assists and 1 block.
“It was a good night for the Lady Bruins,” Coach VanWienen said. “Fun to get on the floor and get to see what we need to work on moving forward. Thought our defense played well and did a good job of keeping us in the match.”
Friday, Aug. 30: Sinclair 3, KCC 0 (Owens Express Invitational)
KCC struggled in the opening match of the Owens Express Invitational Friday, falling in four sets to Sinclair Community College. The Bruins won set three 25-22, but lost the first (31-29), second (25-22) and fourth (25-16).
Knieper had 12 kills and 10 digs; sophomore Jackie Mason (Marshall/Marshall High School) had 13 digs and 3 aces; and freshman Grace Hall (Battle Creek/Pennfield High School) had 8 kills and 1 block.
Friday, Aug. 30: KCC 3, Erie 0 (Owens Express Invitational)
KCC bested Erie Community College in three straight sets in match two of the Owens Express Invitational Friday, with scores of 25-15, 25-9 and 25-20.
“We played a good team match against Erie,” Coach VanWienen said. “It was a good team win with everyone helping to get the win, with 28 kills, 13 aces and 28 digs by the Lady Bruins!”
Saturday, Aug. 31: KCC 3, Vincennes 1 (Owens Express Invitational)
KCC’s second win of the Owens Express Invitational came in match three of the event on Saturday with a victory over Vincennes University in four sets. The Bruins took sets one (25-22), two (25-16) and four (25-23); Vincenness took set three 25-19.
Hall had 14 kills and 2 blocks; sophomore Abigail Howard (Delton/Delton Kellogg High School) had 6 kills, 2 blocks and 5 block assists; and Ducheny had 6 kills, 1 block and 1 ace.
“It was a very good match for us,” Coach VanWienen said. “Grace and Abby really stepped up and played well. Thought our defense did a good job the whole match keeping us in the game. Madison Jones ran the offense and had some key moments to keep us in the game from the serving line. It was good to see us progress and to play a good high-level volleyball match!”
Saturday, Aug. 31: KCC 3, Lakeland 0 (Owens Express Invitational)
The Bruins concluded the Owens Express Invitational Saturday with a win over Lakeland Community College in three sets, with scores of 25-22, 25-19 and 25-20.
Knieper had 11 kills and 10 digs; freshman Rebecca French (Sturgis/Sturgis High School) had 7 kills, 1 solo block and 3 block assists; Mason had 17 digs and 3 aces; and Hall had 6 kills and 1 ace.
“The ladies did a good job finishing up the weekend strong,” Coach VanWienen said. “It was a long couple of days playing five matches in three days and the ladies did very well going 4-1!”
