Class of 2020 Legacy Scholars can use scholarship funds early for summer classes at KCC

High school seniors who qualify for the Legacy Scholars scholarship program can use the scholarship early to take classes this summer at Kellogg Community College.

Legacy Scholars is a scholarship program created in 2005 by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation that provides a last-dollar KCC scholarship for graduates of Battle Creek Public Schools, Lakeview School District or Calhoun Community High School. High school students are eligible for Legacy Scholars funding covering tuition and mandatory fees for up to 62 credits, including four book stipends, for up to five years following high school graduation.

Laura Zalle, senior program officer at the Battle Creek College Access Network, which helps administer the scholarship, said typically Legacy Scholar students have to wait until the fall semester after high school graduation to use the scholarship, but they’re opening it up a semester early for seniors graduating this spring in light of the challenges faced due to COVID-19.

Students can take as many credits this summer as their scholarship allows, but must take at least three credit hours to utilize the scholarship, Zalle said.

To utilize their scholarship this summer, eligible 2020 graduates must fill out the special “2020 Summer Legacy Scholar Application” on the Battle Creek Community Foundation website at www.bccfoundation.org/scholarships. To access the scholarship, applicants must first contact Zalle at laura@battlecreekcan.org or Terry Burleson at terry@battlecreekcan.org to receive a special access code.

While this early access opportunity is only available to the Class of 2020, Zalle said, all other eligible Legacy Scholar cohorts from the graduating classes of 2015 through 2019 are also still able to use their scholarship through the traditional application process. These applicants can also contact Zalle or Burleson if they have not yet completed their application.
