The Kellogg Community College Police Academy is accepting applications for new recruits through July 31.

The KCC Police Academy prepares students to become certified as police officers in Michigan and is one of just three part-time police academies in the state. The academy is approximately 10 months long, with most training conducted three days per week, making the program a more convenient choice than other options for working adults with busy schedules.

Information about the academy, including application forms and instructions, is available on the KCC website at kellogg.edu/policeacademy. Individuals with questions about the process or the academy itself should contact Police Academy Manager Brett Weiss at WeissB@kellogg.edu or 269-565-7896.

Academy instruction includes hands-on experience in:

  • Criminal investigations, law and procedures
  • Defensive tactics
  • Emergency driving
  • Field experience
  • Firearms training
  • Patrol and radar operations
  • Physical training
  • Traffic control

Cadets will also utilize the academy’s state-of-the-art simulation technologies, including the MILO Shooting Simulator, driving simulators and skid car, in addition to real-world police technology and equipment used by police officers on the job.

KCC’s Police Academy is approved by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES), which sets professional standards in education, selection, employment, licensing and funding in law enforcement and criminal justice fields in the state. In Michigan, individuals who want to become police officers must successfully complete an MCOLES-approved basic police training school like KCC’s Police Academy before becoming an officer.

After graduation and obtaining employment within a given police department, KCC Police Academy graduates can advance their careers to positions as sergeants, lieutenants, detectives, K9 officers and other positions based on the availability of positions within their department.
