A record amount of $117,800 was raised for scholarships for Kellogg Community College students during the KCC Foundation’s 24th annual Bruin Scholarship Open this month.

The annual event – held Sept. 10 at Binder Park Golf Course in Battle Creek – is the largest fundraising event of the year for the Foundation and has raised more than $1.5 million since its inception in 1998. This year’s amount raised eclipses the previous record of $106,225, set in 2020, by more than $11,000.

KCC Foundation Executive Director Teresa Durham said funds raised at this event will directly benefit the Foundation’s scholarship program for new and returning Kellogg Community College students.

“The 24th annual Bruin Scholarship Open was a phenomenal success,” Durham said. “We are deeply grateful to all the event sponsors and contributors for their support of KCC students. By reaching the amount raised, we are able to award an increased number of scholarships to assist students with their educational goals.”

A total of 236 golfers participated and 124 sponsors were represented in the Bruin Open this year, which was coordinated by more nearly 60 members of KCC’s staff, retirees and current scholarship recipients as well as dozens of student-athlete volunteers, including members of the men’s and women’s cross-country teams, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s bowling and the women’s soccer team. Special guest and former Detroit Tiger Brandon Inge was on hand to play in the scramble.

Team division champions for the golf event included:

  • Men’s Division: Laborers Local 355 (Jonathan Byrd, Jesse Duverneay, Raymond McGee and Jeremy Roomsburg)
  • Women’s Division: Battle Creek Area Chamber of Commerce (Jenny Andrews, Kara Beer, Jennifer Blank and Beth Pung)
  • Mixed Division: Miller Canfield (Mary Jane Baylor, Ron Baylor, Barb Wassink and Dave Wassink)
