Hispanic Heritage Month events continue at Kellogg Community College in October with a special lunch for students and staff featuring cuisine from Battle Creek’s own Torti Taco.

KCC’s Almuerzo Latino (Latin Lunch) will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, in the Kellogg Room adjacent to the Student Center on KCC’s campus at 450 North Ave. For just $5, KCC students and employees will receive:

  • Three soft corn or flour tortilla tacos with a choice of meats: ground beef, shredded chicken or marinated pork
  • Sides of rice and beans
  • Tortilla chips and choice of three salsas: mild, spicy green or mango

Torti Taco offers authentic Mexican food made from scratch at its location at 5275 Beckley Road in Battle Creek and via catering. The restaurant has won several awards for its dishes – which are created from family recipes – including Startup Business of the Year from the Battle Creek Area Chamber of Commerce in 2017 and First Place: Judge’s Choice at Kalamazoo’s Taco & Tequila Festival in 2018.

National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated in the U.S. from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15 each year to celebrate Latino culture and the past and present contributions of individuals with Latino heritage.

In addition to the Almuerzo Latino event detailed above, Hispanic Heritage Month activities and initiatives at KCC this year include a month-long virtual exhibit curated by KCC’s Morris Library; a series of virtual and in-person Zumba classes; and a virtual tour of the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA), scheduled for Oct. 12.
