Kellogg Community College invites Bruins fans past and present to join the College for the reveal of a brand-new look for KCC mascot Blaze, the first major update to the look of the College mascot in more than 25 years.
The new mascot costume will be revealed at halftime during the women’s basketball game on Feb. 1. Blaze – the name for KCC’s Bruin mascot, a brown grizzly bear – will lead the crowd in a cheer then pose for photos and participate in a meet-and-greet in the gym lobby.
The fun begins with the start of the women’s basketball game at 5:30 p.m. in the gym in the Miller Physical Education Building, on campus at 450 North Ave. in Battle Creek. The new Blaze will make appearances through halftime of the men’s basketball game, which begins at 7:30 p.m.
The games and mascot reveal coincide with the College’s “Blaze of Glory” tailgate event running from 5:15 to 9 p.m., which will feature games, giveaways and more. Admission to the games and all activities is free.
The current incarnation of KCC’s Blaze mascot was introduced at the fall “Bruin Bash” welcome-back event for students on Sept. 10, 1997. After a quarter century of service to the College, Blaze went into hibernation this fall as the College’s Student Life Office, Athletics and Marketing and Communications departments collaborated with BAM! Mascots on a custom design for a new and improved costume.
The result is a friendly, approachable Blaze with a bright eyes and a broad smile that will fit in at elementary school readings and community events as much as courtside in the gym. The new costume is also lighter, easier to see in and offers better mobility for the active lifestyle required for today’s modern mascots.
Support for the project was made possible by funding via a KCC Foundation Program Initiative Grant. The grants are awarded each year to employees, faculty and retirees for projects that directly impact students and connect to the College’s mission.
