The KCC Foundation is pleased to announce six 2023 recipients of the coveted Starfish Awards.

The Starfish Awards program was established in 1999 and is based on the classic story of a young man who sees an older man picking up stranded starfish on a beach and throwing them back into the sea.

“There are so many,” the young man said. “How can you make any difference?”

The older man, throwing another starfish back into the water, said: “It made a difference to that one.”

The Starfish Award recognizes a KCC faculty or staff member who has played a significant role in a student’s education at KCC. Nominations are submitted in each spring semester by KCC students who graduate in the year of the Starfish Award application.

The 2023 Starfish Award recipients are:

  • Dean Alcorn, Public Services and Outreach Librarian, nominated by Jennifer Lyon
  • Joanne Colyn, Davidson Center Process Specialist, nominated by Clara Lowe
  • Dr. Kellyann Garthe, Nursing Education Instructor, nominated by Mackenzie Merchant, Shirley Hill and Reina Reyes
