Sociology course SOCI 206: Race and Ethnic Relations offered online this fall

For the first time ever, this fall Kellogg Community College’s SOCI 206: Race and Ethnic Relations sociology course will be offered entirely online!

The course is worth three credits and will run Aug. 26 through Dec. 13.

Here are four reasons to take SOCI 206: Race and Ethnic Relations this fall, according to the course instructor Dr. Megan Ward:

  1. SOCI 206 covers an interesting, timely and relevant topic, which is race and ethnic relations in the U.S. Here’s the official course description from KCC’s Academic Catalog:

    “This class utilizes a sociological perspective of race and ethnicity to help students better understand the historical and social context of contemporary racial issues within the United States. We will discuss the origins and history of racial categorization, the process of social construction whereby race derives its meaning and power, and processes of racial prejudice and discrimination. By examining sociological research through a theoretical lens, students will also learn about race-based structural inequalities within major American social institutions including K-12 and higher education, housing, labor markets, health care and criminal justice, including issues relating to mass incarceration.”
  2. SOCI 206 fulfills one of the two class requirements from the Personal and Cultural Engagement category of General Education/Applied Core classes required to earn an associate degree at KCC.
  3. SOCI 206 is among the classes that can be used to fulfill requirements in the Social Sciences category of the Michigan Transfer Agreement.
