Kellogg Community College’s Lifelong Learning Department is the recipient of a $4,270 grant from the Branch County Community Foundation to provide free English language learning services in Coldwater.

KCC’s “Empowering English Language Learners in Branch County” initiative, funded via the BCCF’s Community Good Grant, aims to pilot a free English language learning program to increase English language proficiency among low-proficiency speakers in Branch County.

The goal is to help individuals increase their language skills and confidence when navigating services offered by financial institutions, health care providers, educational and other organizations. Specifically, the Lifelong Learning Department plans to offer at least four supplementary ELL classes to at least 100 community members through 2025, starting in January.

“By focusing on these essential areas, the program seeks to empower learners, making them more self-reliant and comfortable in their interactions within the community,” Lifelong Learning Director Casey Fairley said. “This increased confidence is expected to translate into better integration and participation in various aspects of daily life, ultimately leading to a more inclusive and supportive community environment.”

The ELL initiative is in line with the BCCF’s stated grant program goals across categories including educational enrichment, community benefit and long-term impact. Funds will be used to support program and curriculum development; educational materials for students; instructor support; and more.

Programming is anticipated to be held on KCC’s regional Grahl Center campus, located at 125 Seeley St. in Coldwater.

“The Empowering English Language Learners project aims to provide classes that will enhance the English language skills of Branch County’s limited English proficiency community members who possess a basic understanding of English,” Fairley said. “By investing in language education, we contribute to equitable health care and successful integration into financial and educational systems. Together, we can bridge language gaps and empower our community members.”

The BCCF’s Community Good Grant initiative – fueled by the organization’s unrestricted Forever Fund – supports projects and programs which benefit Branch County and Colon. For more information about the Branch County Community Foundation or BCCF grant opportunities, visit brcofoundation.org.
