Students looking to round out their spring schedule can consider adding HIST 265: History of Sports, a brand-new course focused on the history of sports!
The course is worth three credits and will run from 10 to 11:20 a.m. Thursdays Jan. 23 through May 8. As a hybrid course, HIST 265: History of Sports instruction will include both in-person meetings on campus in Battle Creek as well as online activities.
This is a brand-new course that’s offered for the first time this spring. Here’s the course description from KCC’s academic catalog:
“Students in this course will examine the history of sports across a broad spectrum of themes and events. Topics will include, but not be limited to: race and gender, ethics, international relations, gambling, the business of sports, e-sports, sports as recreation, commodification of athletes, marketing, body image. Specific emphasis will be placed on the impact of sports on American culture and conversely, the impact of American society on sports.”
The course learning outcomes are as follows:
- Examine historical eras and movements through the lens of sports.
- Evaluate the impact of sports on social, cultural, economic and political institutions in American history.
- Assess the role of sports in reflecting social, political and cultural trends and attitudes in American history.
- Analyze historical resources and primary source materials related to sports.
