KCC Concert Band to spotlight women composers in March 7 performance

The Kellogg Community College Concert Band will celebrate the work of women composers in a special concert this week on campus in Battle Creek.

The KCC Concert Band, performing under the baton of Director Christopher Momcilovich, will present its “Women in Music: Celebrating the Music of Women Composers” concert starting at 7 p.m. Friday, March 7, in the Binda Performing Arts Center on campus at 450 North Ave.

The event is free and open to the public.

During the event, the Concert Band will perform selections from renowned female composers including Julie Giroux, Anne McGinty, Yukiko Nishimura and Alex Shapiro. The performance aims to highlight their talent and bring awareness to the need for greater inclusion in concert band programming.

“In the world of concert band music, female composers have historically been overlooked,” Momcilovich said. “By dedicating an entire program to their works, we hope to inspire audiences, musicians and educators to recognize the importance of amplifying diverse voices in music.”

The Concert Band is also recruiting musicians of all skill levels for future performances. Individuals can sign up for the Concert Band course MUSI 160 (for credit) or MUSI 160C (non-credit) to join the ensemble.
