Among the new offerings at KCC next fall will be a revamped Sports Management Program with enhanced transferability options for students.
KCC launched the Sports Management Program in the fall of 2021 as an Associate of Applied Science degree program. The College has refined the program in the years since, with some notable enhancements over the past two years culminating in a revamped degree program offering available this fall. Updates include:
- The hiring of a dedicated Sports Management instructor, Samuel Fonseca, in the summer of 2023
- New dedicated SPMT course identifiers (previously Sports Management courses were listed under Physical Education identifiers) starting in the fall of 2024
- A new pathway map culminating in an Associate in Sports Management degree specifically designed for transfer, coming this summer
- New SPMT courses launching as early as this fall
Additionally, an increasing list of program-specific articulation agreements with four-year colleges and universities allow for direct transfer into programs including:
- University of Michigan – Dearborn, Bachelor of Arts in Sports Management
- Western Michigan University, Bachelor of Science in Sports Management
Additional transfer pathways include, but are not limited to:
- Grand Valley State University, Bachelor of Science in Sport Management
- Michigan Technological University. Bachelor of Science in Sports and Fitness Management
- Wayne State University, Bachelor of Science in Sport Management
Faculty and administration are also exploring the possibility of offering an all-online degree option in the future.
The updated degree consists of 62 to 66 credits, including specialized SPMT courses and the 30 general education transfer credits required to complete the Michigan Transfer Agreement. Students who complete the degree will also have the opportunity to earn professional certifications including Medical First Responder, Personal Trainer and Sport Nutrition Specialist.
Program instructor Fonseca says the program positions students well to transfer into bachelor’s level programs on their paths toward Sports Management careers in fields including marketing and promotion, facilities management and operation, coaching and scouting and others.
“There’s real value in attending KCC first. KCC Sports Management students will complete their gen eds, the MTA and significantly reduce expenses compared to students starting at a university,” Fonseca said. “The updated Sports Management Program coming this fall will allow for a more seamless transfer of credits, avoiding duplication, and students will gain that junior status when transferring. Additionally, we’re working closely with advisors from our university transfer partners to ensure a personal connection is made and program requirements are met for students.”
