Kellogg Community College’s student-led Kellogg Activities Board (KAB) is observing Autism Awareness Month with a series of campus and community events focused on increasing the awareness and acceptance of autism.
All events will be held on KCC’s North Avenue campus in Battle Creek and are open to the public. The events are free except for team registration for the dodgeball tournament as outlined below.
Connecting the Pieces
1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 10
KCC Student Center
Groups worked together to complete a section of a puzzle, then joined them to reveal the bigger picture.
The Marble Perspective
11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 16
KCC Student Center
A hands-on activity exploring strengths, self-perception and the impact of labels like autism on inclusion. Participants will distribute marbles into cups based on their strengths, guided by a facilitator. The activity will challenge misconceptions while promoting self-reflection and celebrating the unique strengths of neurodivergent individuals.
Unified Dodgeball Showdown
4 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 21
KCC Soccer Field
$20 per student team, $40 for non-student team
This action-packed tournament will feature teams of three (plus an alternate) competing in an eight-team double-elimination format. Participants will enjoy fast-paced 10-minute matches with a high-energy finals showdown. More than just a game, this event will promote inclusion while supporting the Britain Foundation, an organization dedicated to the advancement of autism research and the promotion of autism awareness. Team slots are first come, first served and can be reserved online at tinyurl.com/KABdodgeball.
Hands Across KCC
3:15 p.m. (arrival) and 3:45 p.m. (photo) Tuesday, April 29
KCC’s North Avenue campus
Participants will meet at the centrally located Circle Drive on campus and link hands toward the Miller Physical Education Building on the north side of campus and Davidson Visual and Performing Arts Center on the south side of campus to create a human chain. The activity is designed to show how unity can create change by symbolizing support, inclusion and the diversity of the autism spectrum.
KAB officer Britain Broderick, who’s also the founder and president of the Britain Foundation, said the group’s Autism Awareness Month programming is “more than a series of events; it’s a movement toward understanding, inclusion and action.”
“Each week, we build upon a foundation of awareness, acceptance and advocacy, creating opportunities for autistic and non-autistic individuals to connect in meaningful ways,” Broderick said. “Through hands-on activities, competitive sports and powerful demonstrations of unity, we challenge misconceptions, celebrate neurodiversity and foster a community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.”
The Kellogg Activities Board is a group of students interested in planning activities on campus and being actively involved on campus.
