Kellogg Community College recognized student artists with more than $5,000 worth of awards and scholarships during an April 25 ceremony honoring outstanding work exhibited as part of the College’s annual Student Art Show
The exhibit, featuring 138 works from 60 student artists, and was on display at the Eleanor R. and Robert A. DeVries Gallery in KCC’s Davidson Visual and Performing Arts Center April 16 through May 2. Exhibit art can be viewed online at rosep9.wixsite.com/kccstudentartexhibit.
Every spring, KCC Art, Photography and Multimedia and Graphic Design program students from the current academic year are invited to submit entries for consideration for the Student Art Show exhibit and awards. A faculty committee reviews and organizes all submissions and the bulk of the work is juried independently by an art professional chosen from outside of the College. The juror (or jurors) selects the major media category awards and honorable mentions, with cash prizes made possible through a generous donation made to the KCC Foundation by artist Kimiko Petersen and her husband Sherman Petersen.
Awards listed below include these Kimiko Petersen Fine Art Awards – including one Best of Show ($500), five Best of Media ($200 each) and 13 Honorable Mention awards ($100 each) distributed across categories at the juror’s discretion – as well as additional miscellaneous arts awards.
Kimiko Petersen Fine Art Award winners this year were selected by juror sculptor and KCC alumnus Brian Nelson, a professor and coordinator of the sculpture program at Eastern Michigan University.
“I was astounded to see such great work in all media,” Nelson said in his juror’s statement. “I was honored to serve as the juror for your student exhibition and was truly impressed by the outstanding work across all media. I could have easily given out 10 more awards! KCC remains a jewel with excellent, supportive faculty.”
