In 1956, a bold idea took root in Battle Creek. What began as Battle Creek Community College was more than a new institution, it was a promise. A promise that education could be accessible, local and transformative.

From its earliest days, KCC was shaped by necessity and vision. Postwar America was expanding, industries were evolving and communities needed skilled workers, informed citizens and pathways for advancement. The founders of Battle Creek Community College recognized that higher education must be rooted in the community it serves – responsive to its needs, accessible to its residents and committed to its future.

Over the decades, KCC has evolved in step with the region. New locations in multiple communities across our service region were established. Academic programs expanded to meet emerging workforce demands. Partnerships were forged with local industries, universities and civic organizations. Generations of students, many the first in their families to attend college, have walked through KCC’s doors and emerged prepared for careers, transfer and lifelong contribution.

Legacy, however, is not defined solely by longevity. It is defined by impact.

As author Maya Angelou observed, “Your legacy is every life you have touched.” By that measure, the legacy of Kellogg Community College is profound. It lives in the nurse caring for patients at a local hospital. In the skilled tradesperson building the infrastructure of our region. In the educator shaping the next generation. In the entrepreneur launching a new business. And in every student who discovered, at KCC, that their future could be larger than they imagined.

As we celebrate 70 years, we honor those who had the foresight to create this institution in 1956. We honor all employees, faculty and staff who have dedicated their careers to its mission. We honor the students who entrusted KCC with their dreams. And we honor the community whose support and partnership have sustained its growth.

The story of Kellogg Community College is an ongoing narrative. Each new student, each new program and each new partnership adds another chapter – ensuring that KCC continues to serve as a place of opportunity, transformation and enduring legacy.
