Felicia Jaramillo, 38, of Battle Creek, graduated from KCC in 2023 with an Associate in Applied Science in Business Management degree as a Michigan Reconnect student.
During her time at KCC, Jaramillo was a member of the Mental Health Matters Club and the Phi Theta Kappa honor society and made the President’s List or Dean’s List every semester. She later founded the award-winning DelectAble, a gourmet restaurant and bakery that provides employment opportunities to individuals with disabilities in Battle Creek.
Why did you choose your major/area of study?
I knew I wanted to own a business that was inclusive to the differently abled community. My son is on the autism spectrum and I coach a differently abled team that plays sports and hangs out a couple times each month. These guys are growing up, into adulthood, and they want to be included in the community and workforce but are struggling to find and maintain job opportunities.
Why did you choose to study your major specifically at KCC?
I chose KCC because it was very close to my home. I loved the whole experience. Living close was awesome because I could easily take advantage of the library, bookstore and Student Center!
What are you doing now, and how did KCC help you on your path?
I founded and own a local sandwich shop/bakery called DelectAble, where our mission is to provide job training and employment opportunities for people with different abilities! “Everyone is ABLE at DelectABLE!!!”
Was your favorite part of your time at KCC, and why?
I really enjoyed learning and taking in-person classes the most. I learn better in a classroom, and had a few awesome teachers who I felt really cared and guided my journey. I did a project in my marketing class that helped me focus in on my vision and decide which direction to take. I don’t know if I would even be where I am today without doing that project.
What’s the most interesting thing you learned at KCC?
It’s pretty random, but I love art. I learned that art comes in many forms, even from trash! Seriously, go to the music and art building … there is the coolest piece of art composed of trash from this artist’s road trip. I think it’s an AMAZING piece! Everyone should check it out!
What advice do you have for current or future KCC students?
Take it seriously but remember to have fun! Meet new people and, most importantly, don’t be afraid to be involved in the conversations! When you are engaged in the conversation, you will learn so much more.
Anything else you’d like to say?
I’d just like to thank the staff and faculty for creating an engaging learning environment, caring about the students and going the extra mile. And to the students: Do your best! You can do hard things! Go Bruins!
DelectAble is located at 50 Jackson St. W. in downtown Battle Creek. Learn more at delectabletreatsandsweets.com.
