Youth interested in music and theatre can experience both at Kellogg Community College’s Musical Theatre Summer Camp beginning next month.
The eight-week camp is for fourth through ninth graders and will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, June 14 through Aug. 4, at KCC’s Davidson Visual and Performing Arts Center, on campus at 450 North Ave., Battle Creek. Participants will experience the thrill of creating and performing in their very own musical play, culminating in a public performance beginning at 7 p.m. Aug. 4.
Dr. Gerald Blanchard, director of Vocal Music and Music Area coordinator at KCC, said the camp will be “an educational, delightful and fun opportunity for area kids to find their own creative and expressive selves through artistic play.”
The Musical Theatre Summer Camp will cover every facet of play creation, from writing and revision to rehearsing and performing the finished product. Each participant will have opportunity to take part in large and small group ensemble activities, learn new songs and create their own storyline, culminating in a full musical production.
Carmen Bell, voice faculty member at KCC and director of the summer program, said participants will be coached on vocal health, singing technique, music theory, aural development, acting, stage deportment and more.
Bell encourages interested students to “Jump in and explore all elements of theatre-making in this dynamic, intensive program.”
Registration is $100 and can be completed by filling out the registration form available online at www.kellogg.edu/community-music. Space in the camp is limited and will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis.
