Katherine Sprague decided to become a CNA because she wanted to help people and make their lives better.
Sprague, 25, of Springfield, was home-schooled in Lowell and graduated in 2008. She finished an 11-week CNA training program at Kellogg Community College earlier this month and sits for her state certification exam this week.
After high school, Sprague studied environmental biology at a college in Grand Rapids and later built a career working at a car dealership for several years. She says she eventually felt like she wanted to do something more meaningful and focused on helping others.
That’s where CNA training came in.
Taking care of her sick grandmother when she fell ill about a year ago also factored into Sprague’s decision to begin CNA training at KCC.
“That got me thinking about the medical field being something I could do that would mean more to me,” Sprague says. “Becoming a CNA seemed like a good place to start learning about and getting into the medical field.”
Sprague chose to study at KCC because it was conveniently located and she’d heard good things about the CNA Program from her boyfriend’s mom, who’d gone through the Nursing Program at KCC.
After getting her CNA certification, Sprague wants to return to school and is considering working toward her Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) certification.
“My experience has been great,” Sprague says of her time in the CNA Program at KCC. “I’m learning so much and the instructors do a wonderful job of making sure you will know what to do in real-life situations. I would definitely recommend this program.”
