KCC announces 2018 Student Art Exhibition award winners

KCC's 2018 Student Art Exhibit, on display in the gallery in the Davidson Center.

Kellogg Community College recognized two dozen student artists at the College’s Annual Student Art Exhibition awards ceremony April 22.

The exhibition, a juried contest featuring more than $1,400 in award money – including a $250 Best in Show award – allows students to enter artwork across five categories.

Shaquira Cage and her photograph, “Life,” won Best in Show.

“When I first saw Shaquira Cage’s large-scale photographic image, ‘Life,’ it took my breath away,” KCC Photography and Multimedia Program Coordinator and Gallery Director Ryan Flathau said in his critical review of the work.

This year’s juror for the contest was watercolor artist Janice Garrett, a former KCC student who went on to graduate from Western Michigan University with a degree in art education before earning a master’s degree in studio art from Eastern Michigan University. She taught art for 19 years in the Kalamazoo Public Schools system.

Annual Student Art Exhibition works will be on display through May 2 in the Eleanor R. and Robert A. DeVries Gallery in the Davidson Visual and Performing Arts Center on KCC’s campus at 450 North Ave., Battle Creek. The exhibit is free and open to the public for viewing during regular gallery hours, which are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.
