Students and employees from Kellogg Community College’s Public Safety Education Department raised $3,927 for Special Olympics Michigan via donations collected as part of the Kalamazoo Polar Plunge this past weekend.
More than 25 students and employees from the College’s Police Academy and Emergency Medical Services Program raised money for the event, jumping into the icy waters of a February Michigan winter at a pool at Bell’s Eccentric Café on Saturday.
Approximately $54,000 was raised during the event, well over the event goal of $45,000.
“Thanks to all our KCC students and employees who took the plunge this past weekend to support Special Olympics Michigan, and thanks to all the community and alumni donors who help us make this event such a success each year,” KCC Public Safety Education Director and Polar Plunge team captain Rob Miller said. “Go Bruins!”
KCC has fielded a polar plunge team under Miller’s leadership for the past several years, and has raised more than $30,000 through the event since 2013.
The Kalamazoo Polar Plunge is affiliated with the grassroots Law Enforcement Torch Run, through which law enforcement and corrections officers raise funds for and create awareness of Special Olympics Michigan year round.
