Kellogg Community College is pleased to announce the national accreditation of the College’s Medical Assistant Program by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
The accreditation, which was approved by the CAAHEP Board on March 20, signifies that KCC’s program meets professional industry standards and makes graduates of the program eligible to complete the CMA (AAMA) Certification/Recertification Exam to become Certified Medical Assistants through the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants.
KCC Medical Assistant Program Coordinator Lori Haley called the CMA (AAMA) the “golden” credential in medical assisting.
“This is a big deal,” Haley said. “It means our students will be able to complete the CMA (AAMA) examination after being taught and evaluated at the highest standards and guidelines, and it means our community will have the opportunity to be treated by a KCC medical assistant. They can be assured that the medical assistant was taught and evaluated according to the highest standards and guidelines in the medical assistant profession.”
The Medical Assistant Program was among four new Allied Health programs added to KCC’s academic offerings for students beginning with the Fall 2018 semester. Chris VandenBerg, director of Allied Health, MRI and Radiography at KCC, praised Haley for doing a “phenomenal job” coordinating the new program.
“I want to commend Lori on the hard work that she put towards writing the self-study for accreditation and preparation for the initial site visit,” VandenBerg said. “She takes a lot of pride in the program and we are very proud of her accomplishment with this initial accreditation approval.”
KCC’s Medical Assistant Program is a 29-credit-hour certificate program offered in a hybrid format with predominantly online classes and minimal visits to campus. Twenty students are accepted to the program each year.
