For the first time in nearly five years, Kellogg Community College is offering an introductory Criminal Justice course in Hastings.
The three-credit CRJU 101: Introduction to Criminal Justice will run from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays starting Aug. 28 at the College’s Fehsenfeld Center campus, located at 2950 West M-179 Highway just outside of downtown Hastings.
It’s the first time the course has been offered at KCC’s Hastings campus since the Spring 2020 semester. Fehsenfeld Center Director Carole Davis said adding the course this fall was in direct response to requests from officials from both the Barry County Sheriff’s Office and Michigan State Police, who’ve inquired about partnering to recruit more law enforcement officers in the Barry Country area.
CRJU 101: Introduction to Criminal Justice is the foundational Criminal Justice course at KCC and is required for students pursuing an Associate in Criminal Justice, Associate of Applied Science in Corrections or Associate of Applied Science in Law Enforcement degree.
The course is an important first step for students seeking careers as attorneys or in law enforcement, including for future police or corrections officers. It also transfers to more than 40 colleges and universities in Michigan alone, including Central Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, Michigan State University, the University of Michigan, Western Michigan University and others.
The course is listed in KCC’s academic catalog as covering, “The processes, institutions, and administration of criminal justice in the United States. The crime problem and criminal law, law enforcement, criminal prosecution, bail, diversion, the jury trial and sentencing, the correctional system (including probation, prisons, inmates’ rights and parole) and introduction to the juvenile justice process will be examined.”
