Kellogg Community College will exhibit more than two dozen works in the signature colorful, illustrative style of Grand Rapids artist Emily Luyk starting Jan. 21 on campus in Battle Creek.

Luyk’s exhibit, titled “Where They Live,” will run through Feb. 13 in the Davidson Visual and Performing Arts Center’s Eleanor R. and Robert A. DeVries Gallery, on campus at 450 North Ave. in Battle Creek.

The exhibit is free and open to the public during regular gallery hours, which are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays.

An opening reception with the artist – also free and open to the public – will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, in the gallery.

Luyk is a full-time illustrator, fine artist and muralist whose detailed drawings and paintings depict surreal, fantastic scenes focused on flora, fauna and the cosmos.

“Where They Live” is a collection of 26 such such works created between 2021 and 2024 with pen and acrylic ink, “inspired by the connections and mysteries found, or potentially still undiscovered, in the natural universe,” according to the artist.

Luyk earned an Associate of Arts degree from Grand Rapids Community College and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (with honors) from Kendall College of Art and Design, with a focus in illustration and metal working.

Luyk spends most of the year touring the country to participate in some of the nation’s most prestigious fine art fairs, including the Old Town Art Fair in Chicago and the Plaza Art Fair in Kansas City. Recent awards include Best in Category at Art on the Square in Belleville, Illinois; an Award of Merit at the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival in Winter Park, Florida; and an Honorable Mention at the Penrod Arts Fair in Indianapolis.
