Second-year Kellogg Community College Dental Hygiene student Misha Bakhsh, 26, of Ypsilanti, graduates this spring from the Dental Hygiene Program.
Why did you choose your major/area of study?
Upon completing my bachelor’s degree and securing a position as a research lab technician, I found myself dedicating my days to handling specimens and entering result data into a computer. During this period, I came to the realization of the profound sense of fulfillment I had experienced during my six-year tenure as a dental assistant, where patient care was at the forefront of my responsibilities. This realization prompted me to pursue further education in dental hygiene.
Why did you choose to study your major specifically at KCC?
This program was more cost-effective compared to other options and was the sole program that transferred all my prerequisites, eliminating the need for retakes and incurring additional time and financial expenses.
What’s been your favorite part of your time at KCC, and why?
One of the most rewarding aspects of my time at KCC has been working as a student worker while simultaneously pursuing my education. This dual role has provided me with the opportunity to engage with faculty members outside of the traditional classroom setting and office hours. Consequently, I have gained access to expert guidance and support when encountering emerging questions related to the lecture material. It also gives me an insight on how a dental clinic operates and of the things required behind the scenes. Not only do I improve in patient care skills as a student dental hygienist, but also as a student worker I get to excel in intercommunication skills.
What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned at KCC?
My experience working in a patient care setting at the KCC Dental Hygiene Clinic has provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the essence of service to others. Furthermore, my academic pursuits here have instilled in me a fundamental principle of life: My service to others is not contingent upon the extent to which others serve me.
What is your goal for after you graduate from KCC? What do you hope to do for a career?
Upon graduating from KCC, I intend to embark on a professional and successful career as a dental hygienist. In the future, I aspire to pursue a master’s degree to further enhance my education in the dental hygiene field. Additionally, I am eager to utilize my dental hygiene skills acquired at KCC in ministry settings that involve missionary work.
What advice do you have for current or future KCC students?
Continue your perseverance. These two years during your academic journey will be the most challenging yet equally rewarding.
Anything else you’d like to say?
I appreciate the instructors’ genuine concern for their students’ well-being. They consistently demonstrate unwavering support for our success, offering encouraging words and motivating us to persevere.
